ITEM 6 : MEMORY STRATEGIES

Memory Strategies

Hello readers,

For today’s topic I want to share with you guys about memory strategies and how it works. Enjoy!

(Activity 4.1 : page 90)

The above screenshot is my answer to the activity 4.1. So, based on the instruction given,  I got 3 points for YES answer and 3 points for No answer. My TOTAL POINT IS 6.

*note: A high score indicates that you are already using many good memory strategies.

Here comes the question. What are MEMORY STRATEGIES?

Memory Strategies

Memory strategies are important to help us aid our memory from what we have learnt. “Having a good memory” involves both putting information into memory and getting it back out—both storage and retrieval.

There are two types of memory strategies that I want to share with you today;

General Memory Strategies

The following general strategies can help us acquire, retain, and retrieve course information.

·        Spaced Practice

Spaced practice involves spacing your study time over a longer period, with breaks between practice sessions. Studying for a shorter periods of time is wiser. For example, we study for one or two hour time blocks can prevent us from boredom, avoid fatigue and improve our concentration and motivation as well.

Spaced practice allows some time for the information to jell in long term memory. If we try to remember too much things in one time, we would not be able to retrieve very much of them.

·        Break Task Down

Instead of learning all the information for our examination at one time, study one or two chapters each day and add additional material such as notes from lecturers or tutorial we have done during classes.

By doing that, we can do better job to get it into our long term memory.

·        Repetition

We cannot learn information by repeating it only one time. Cannot!

Why? It is because during college life we need to learn so many complex information that repeating all of them for just one time won’t work for us. Always look up or reread the same information daily.

·        Overlearning

Overlearning is an important strategy for test preparation. It involves continuing work on material even after it is learned – long term memory. Every time we review the information back, we reduce forgetting and strenghten  the path to your long term memory.

Specific Memory Strategies

Many specific learning strategies are effective for helping you learn and remember. Weinstein and Mayer describe five groups of learning strategies: rehearsal strategies, elaboration strategies, organizational strategies, comprehension monitoring strategies, and affective and motivational strategies.

Rehearsal

It involves practicing the material until it is learned. As we know, we need a lot of repetiton to learn an information. There are two types of rehearsel strategies which are low-level and high-level rehearsal

So, that is all the information I want to share with you. Thank you so much for reading and goodbye!
